Heinrich-Harrer-Museum

The Heinrich-Harrer-Museum stands in Hüttenberg, a small town in the Austrian province of Kärnten. It occupies a former village school built in late 19th-century Austrian Historicist style, now protected as a monument. The two-storey building has a symmetrical front with a central gable and side wings. From 1874 to 1968 it served as the local primary school. In 1983 the building was repurposed to house the museum dedicated to Heinrich Harrer. The museum displays about 4 000 objects across several rooms. Visitors see equipment from Harrer’s climbs and sports, photographs, maps, drawings and more than 100 000 negatives. A large section covers his years in Tibet, where he became tutor and friend to the 14th Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama himself dedicated a small Buddhist prayer room in 1992, and a photograph shows him seated on the throne reserved for him. A permanent sand mandala remains intact, unlike the usual temporary ones. Outside, a steel stairway climbs the rock face opposite the museum to form the Hüttenberg Lingkor. This pilgrimage path follows Tibetan tradition and leads upward across the valley floor. The museum also documents the suppression of Tibetans since 1959, showing how culture, monasteries and relics were destroyed and how many Han Chinese settlers arrived.
