Fallersleben Castle

Fallersleben Castle stands in the Wolfsburg district of Fallersleben, Lower Saxony. It is one of three important historic buildings in the town, alongside Neuhaus and Wolfsburg Castles. The castle sits beside a lake, near St Michael’s Church and the Old Brewery, forming a historic group of buildings. Built between 1520 and 1551, it replaced an earlier structure destroyed in the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud. Originally a horseshoe-shaped complex, it later gained a moat up to 12 metres wide and 5 metres deep. Only the west wing survives today, a timber-framed building about 40 metres long on a stone base. The castle was once home to Duke Francis of Brunswick and Lüneburg, who began its construction but died before it was finished. His wife, Clara of Saxe-Lauenburg, completed the work in 1551 and lived there for over 27 years. She introduced coinage, market systems and a brewery to Fallersleben, boosting the town’s growth. After her death, the castle served as a ducal residence, then as an Amt seat from 1855, housing civic authorities. Renovations in the 17th century kept the building in use through changing roles. Today, the castle’s basement holds the Hoffmann von Fallersleben Museum, dedicated to 19th-century German literature and democracy. The upper floor features an art gallery with works by Franz Hoffmann-Fallersleben. Visitors can see exposed cellars with barrel-vaulted ceilings and metre-thick walls, now covered by glass for viewing. The castle’s surviving west wing and reconstructed moat and bridge hint at its past as a fortified seat. Nearby, the linked cellars once stored food for the ducal household. The site blends history with culture, offering a glimpse into centuries of life in Fallersleben.
