Haubenschloß

The Haubenschloß stands in Kempten in the Allgäu region of Swabia. It began as a small Gothic castle called Anwanden, first shown on a 1569 city print with two towers. In 1601 and 1632 the patrician Tobias Schmelz rebuilt most of the structure. A 1604 document records his agreement with the prince-abbot about expanding the estate. The name Haubenschloß comes from the 18th-century owner Hieronymus Hau. The house was enlarged in 1716 and 1778, adding the two double turrets with their small saddle roofs. After serving as an inn since 1886, it was rebuilt in 1949 following wartime damage. The steep east gable with its scrolls dates from the 18th century. From 1918 to 1955 the Allgäu poet Else Eberhard-Schobacher lived in one of the turret flats. Visitors see a rectangular building with its western twin turrets and eastern scroll gable. Close by are the Allgäu grammar school and the Haubenschloß school named after the house. The Allgäu landscape surrounds the site, linking modern education with this historic landmark.
