The Rechtswissenschaftliche Fakultät in Vienna stands on the Schottenbastei in the city’s first district. Its main building, the Juridicum, was constructed between 1968 and 1984 and houses most of the faculty’s activities. The site sits close to the historic Schottentor gate, linking the modern campus to the old university quarter. The faculty is the largest centre for legal research and teaching in the German-speaking world and one of the oldest law schools anywhere. It introduced Austrian private law as a separate subject in 1810 and broke new ground with reforms in the 19th century. Today it offers both traditional diplomas and newer programmes in international and digital law. Its reputation is confirmed by top European and world rankings. Inside the Juridicum visitors find twelve institutes covering every branch of law, from Roman legal history to cyber-law. Research centres such as the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights collaborate with the faculty. The building itself is a quiet place to study, yet it has produced nine Austrian chancellors and twenty-three justice ministers among its graduates.
