Schloss Hohenthann

Schloss Hohenthann stands in the quiet hamlet of Hohenthann within the municipality of Obertaufkirchen in the Mühldorf am Inn district of Bavaria. Once an aristocratic residence, it now appears as a single farmstead surrounded by open fields and gentle hills. The name also refers to a vanished medieval stronghold that once belonged to local nobles. Historical records first mention the area around Obertaufkirchen in about 790, when the Archbishopric of Salzburg listed churches and estates nearby. By the 12th century the brothers Konrad and Raffolt von Hohenthann appear in documents, giving their family name to the place. The estate passed through several noble families, including the Khaltes, who acquired it in the mid-16th century. A contemporary engraving by Michael Wening from 1710 shows a grand building that actually belonged to a different Hohenthann near Rottenburg. By 1591 Sabina von Khaltes had endowed the property to the hospital in Mühldorf, which held it until at least 1789. Around 1780 the site held the status of a spiritual manor under ecclesiastical control. Today only the isolated farmhouse Hohenthann 4 remains on the site. Visitors find a peaceful rural setting with wide views across gently rolling farmland. The surviving farmstead stands at the end of a narrow lane lined with mature linden trees. Stone barns and outbuildings surround the main house, which retains some 18th-century detailing. The surrounding fields stretch to the horizon, broken only by small copses and the occasional farm track. The place offers a quiet reminder of the region’s medieval past without any modern distractions.
