Brückenwaage Fernitz

The former weighbridge in Fernitz stands in the village of Fernitz-Mellach in the southern Austrian province of Styria. Built in the first half of the 20th century, it was once used by local farmers to weigh heavy loads. After a new heavy-duty weighbridge opened nearby in 2005, the old site was retired from service. The small weighbridge building was restored and extended with a circular ice pavilion designed by architect Oswald Madritsch. The weighbridge itself is a 25-tonne roll-weight scale made by C. Schember & Söhne. Its original technical equipment remains intact and still works today. Inside the building, the electrical switchgear for lighting the adjoining park is housed. A new ice pavilion was added during the restoration, preserving the site’s industrial character while giving it a modern use. Visitors find a compact weighbridge building with its original 25-tonne scale still in place. The attached circular ice pavilion provides a sheltered spot to pause. The surrounding park is lit by the switchgear kept inside the building. The site stands as a quiet reminder of the village’s agricultural past and its later adaptation for public use.
