Botscheberg
The Botscheberg, also called Bosselberg, is a vanished medieval motte on the western edge of Vehlefanz in Brandenburg’s Oberhavel district. The flat-topped mound sits in a small marshy hollow near the centre of the Glien plateau. Its regular shape and size suggest it was raised in the 10th century, soon after the first eastward expansion of German rule began around 930. A surrounding ditch once defended the base, and traces of a vanished outer bailey can still be traced on the north-east side. Excavations yielded Slavic and early German pottery as well as fragments of lime-mortared fieldstone walls that hint at a timber-framed building. The purpose of the tower remains debated, yet its position exactly midway between the former Slav strongholds of Tietzow and Bötzow is striking. The two sites lie a day’s march of 25 km apart, and the Botscheberg’s name may echo Bötzowberg, implying the watchtower once overlooked that distant castle. Archaeology shows the mound was reused by Slavs in the 11th century before it was incorporated into the later castle of Vehlefanz during the 12th or 13th century. No comparable motte exists in the immediate area; the nearest examples lie far to the west in the Prignitz. Visitors today walk across the low, grassy mound and can still trace the shallow ditch that once ringed it. The surrounding wetland keeps the site quiet and free of modern intrusions. A low information board marks the spot where fragments of medieval pottery and stones were found. From the top there is a wide view over the flat Glien countryside, giving a sense of how the tower once commanded the marshy plain. The absence of other mottes nearby makes the Botscheberg a quiet witness to a vanished frontier of the early German-Slav borderland.
