Teltschik Tower

Teltschik Tower stands in Wilhelmsfeld, a village in the Odenwald hills of southern Germany. It is a wooden observation tower, forty-one metres tall, built to honour Walter Teltschik’s childhood in the Kuhländchen near Brno. The tower’s design recalls the wooden churches of the Sudetenland, where Teltschik’s family once lived. A viewing platform thirty-six metres above the ground offers a wide view across the surrounding landscape. From this height visitors can see the rolling hills of the Odenwald and the distant Rhine Valley. The tower is worth the journey because it combines local craftsmanship with personal history. Walter Teltschik planned and financed the structure himself, completing it in the late 20th century. Its wooden construction blends with the forest setting rather than dominating it. The tower also serves as a quiet memorial to a region lost after the Second World War. Visitors reach it by a short walk from the village centre, making it an easy addition to a day in the countryside. At the top, the platform is enclosed by railings for safety while allowing unobstructed views. On clear days the Black Forest appears to the south-west and the city of Mannheim can be seen to the west. The tower stands among tall trees, so the outlook changes with the seasons. In autumn the colours of the Odenwald hills frame the view, while in winter distant towns show through bare branches. The climb is gentle and the air cooler at the top, rewarding each step with a wider scene.
