Pfarrkirche hl. Ulrich, Tarrenz

The parish church of Tarrenz stands on a rise above the village centre, surrounded by a cemetery. It belongs to the Roman Catholic diocese of Innsbruck and is dedicated to Saint Ulrich. The church has been protected as a historic monument since the 15th century. Its history begins in 1409, though the core structure dates from around 1500 when Master Jörg of the Imst building lodge led a reconstruction. The nave was consecrated in 1503. Later, in the 18th century, the nave was extended westward and the interior was given a Baroque appearance. By the late 19th century the church had been restored to Gothic style and elevated to parish status in 1891. Visitors enter a three-bay nave topped by ribbed vaulting and a single-bay choir with an eight-sided apse. The north side holds a three-storey tower with chamfered sound windows, capped by a Baroque octagonal lantern dated 1686. On the south side of the nave are two side chapels: the Cross Chapel from about 1730 and the Francis Xavier Chapel from 1811. The walls carry late Gothic and Baroque frescoes, including a damaged Saint Christopher from around 1520 and a later version from the early 18th century. The high altar and pulpit display neogothic woodwork by Josef Bachlechner and Heinrich Kluibenschädel, while the organ dates from 1888.
