Saint Thomas Church
The parish church of Enzersdorf an der Fischa stands in the centre of the small town in Lower Austria’s Bruck an der Leitha district. A Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Thomas, it belongs to the Schwechat deanery within the Vienna archdiocese. The building has been listed as a protected monument since the 20th century. Its history goes back to at least 1200, when a church was first recorded, possibly linked to the Schotten monastery. The oldest surviving parts are the partly Romanesque tower and a Gothic chapel from the 14th century. In 1714–15 the nave was rebuilt in Baroque style under the patronage of Bartholomäus I. von Tinti. Around 1900 the tower received its onion dome and a new confession chapel was added. The interior was restored in 1995 and the exterior in 1998. Visitors enter through a richly decorated Baroque west front with pilasters, a triangular pediment and statues of Saint Anthony, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Thomas. Inside, the three-bay nave has barrel vaulting on pilasters and a two-storey west gallery. The older Romanesque choir block leads into a narrower Baroque choir with ribbed vaults. The southern Gothic chapel preserves medieval wall paintings and a painted sacrament niche. The high altar shows the Doubting Thomas and statues of saints, while side altars feature oval panels by Balthasar Scabino de Rossa. A late-17th-century bell and an organ transferred from Mariabrunn complete the furnishings.
