Hannser-Kirche

The Hannser-Kirche stands in a clearing near Brenitz in the Glödnitz municipality of Carinthia. A branch church of Altenmarkt, it is dedicated to John the Baptist and protected as a listed monument. The building sits in a quiet wooded landscape, far from main roads. The church is a fine example of Romanesque architecture with a six-sided roof turret and a narrow choir ending in a straight wall. A wooden porch dated 1850 shelters the entrance. On the south wall of the choir a fresco of Saint Christopher from the early 1500s survives. Inside, the flat ceiling of the nave contrasts with the patterned flat ceiling of the square choir, both from the same period. A carved Knorpelwerk altar from the mid-1600s shows John the Baptist in the central panel flanked by two unknown male saints. Beneath the altar slab a Roman-era inscribed stone for Priminus and Veneria is set into the mensa. The 1539 pulpit displays flat ornamental carvings, and a 17th-century Johannisschüssel adds to the furnishings.
