Schoibernberg

The Schoibernberg is a gently rounded hill rising to 883 metres beside the Irrsee in Upper Austria’s Salzkammergut. It belongs to the Mondsee Flysch chain, a north-western spur of the mountains between Irrsee, Mondsee and Attersee. The Vöckla river cuts the range off from the Rehberg and the Glashüttenwald to the east, while the Gommersberg spur drops south-west to the lake. The hill’s name appears in 1787 as Schoibern, taken from a hamlet on its broad crest. Earlier, a 1667 map labels the area the Pergerhuet, perhaps after the settlement at the foot of the slope above Oberhofen. Geologists recognise two rock layers: older Cretaceous marls on the summit and younger Palaeocene beds along the northern ridge. Walkers reach the top on well-marked forest tracks from the Gommersberg, from Obernberg near Oberhofen or from Angern on the Vöckla. These routes join a forest road that circles the summit at about 800 metres. From there small paths wind through the woods to the highest point, where views open over the Irrsee and the surrounding Flysch hills.
