Pfarrkirche Halbenrain

The parish church of Halbenrain stands in the market town of Halbenrain in Styria. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the deanery of Radkersburg in the diocese of Graz-Seckau. The building is protected as a monument. The church was first mentioned in 1418 and rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1717. A major interior restoration took place in 1962. The simple façade features a triangular gable and a scratched-plaster image of Saint Nicholas above the portal, added in 1958. Inside, the three-bay nave has ribbed vaulting with double ribs over coupled pilasters. The organ loft, supported by columns, spans three bays. The narrower two-bay choir ends in a straight wall. The square tower on the north side of the choir carries a renewed onion dome. To the east, a Loreto chapel houses the Stürgkh family crypt. The chapel’s exterior is richly articulated with niche figures of Joachim and Anna and the Stürgkh coat of arms in the gable field from the third quarter of the 18th century. The choir vault displays a fresco of the Trinity and figures of the four Evangelists from the late 19th century. A stone column stands in front of the church, erected in 1967.
