Sports Walk of Fame

The Sports Walk of Fame in Magdeburg honours athletes and trainers with strong ties to the city. It runs along the Breiter Weg in the old town, a busy street lined with shops and cafés. The walk began in 2007 when ten names were chosen from 150 suggestions put forward by the public and local press. Magdeburg has produced more than a hundred Olympians, world and European champions who together won over four hundred medals. The plaques on the pavement mark where each champion is remembered, with bronze reliefs showing their sport and achievements. The first ten stars of 2007 included Arno Bieberstein, who won swimming gold in 1908, and Bernd Berkhahn, honoured in 2021 for his work as a coach. Visitors walk past the granite and bronze plaques set into the pavement. Each one carries the name of a champion and the event that made them famous. Some plaques also note the sponsor who helped pay for them. The list ranges from water-polo players of the 1920s to modern swimmers and canoeists who won medals in Tokyo.
