St Fagans Castle

St Fagans Castle stands in the village of St Fagans, just west of Cardiff. The building is an Elizabethan mansion built in the late 16th century on the site of a ruined medieval castle. Part of the original 13th-century boundary wall still surrounds the house in a D-shape. The estate passed through several families, including the Herberts and the powerful Lewis family, who owned it from 1616. In the 19th century the Windsor-Clive family restored the house and created terraced gardens between 1865 and 1900. The castle and its grounds became Grade I listed in 1977. The castle is worth visiting for its layered history and surviving features. The Grade I listing covers both the house and its gardens, which are also on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. A lead water cistern in the courtyard, brought from the Lewis family’s Van estate, is Grade II* listed and bears the family arms and the Latin inscription DEVENIENDO. One decorative panel is cast upside down, a memento mori symbolising the fleeting nature of power. Many garden structures carry Grade II status. Inside, period rooms display furniture and fittings from different eras. The grounds contain St Fagans National Museum of History, with buildings that once housed the Welsh Folk Museum. Terraced walks and lawns stretch around the house, framed by medieval walls. Visitors can see the cistern, explore the gardens, and view the castle’s interiors arranged to show its changing uses over centuries.
