Goetheweg

The Goetheweg is a themed hiking trail that winds through the Trattenbachtal valley in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg. It links Wald im Pinzgau with Neukirchen am Großvenediger, passing meadows and mountain streams. The path begins at the Gasthof Rechtegg, where walkers first see the towering peaks of the Hohe Tauern. It follows an old farm track before crossing to the western bank of the Trattenbach stream. From there the route offers two choices: a short detour to the Trattenbachalm or a longer march into the protected landscape of the Hinteres Filzenschartenmoos. Seven learning posts along the 6-kilometre trail explore Goethe’s colour theory and plant metamorphosis. Each station also looks at geology, cultural landscapes and alpine habitats. The panels were designed by artist Christian Hitsch and carry titles such as ‘The geological structure – foundation of the landscape and storehouse of great treasures’ and ‘The fish pass – keeping the stream as a continuous lifeline’. Other posts examine the balance between human use and nature, the delicate moorland, and the challenges of building and supplying energy in the mountains. Walkers find a gentle climb through meadows and beside clear brooks. The route is wide and well marked, so families with children can take it without difficulty. At every station a simple board explains the local rocks, plants or waterworks. The valley’s quiet beauty and the distant glaciers give the walk a calm, reflective mood.
