Brux Castle

Brux Castle stands in Aberdeenshire, about 2.4 kilometres east of Kildrummy, beside the river Don. The site once held a tower called the Tower of Brux, built by the Forbes family. A branch of the Forbes family owned the manor from 1409 after marrying the heiress. In the early 16th century the manor became a barony. By the 18th century it was described as a gentleman’s seat. The castle itself has left few traces, though some stonework at the nearby Mains of Brux probably belongs to the old structure. The Forbes family kept Brux until the line died out. After that the tower fell into ruin and was gradually dismantled. Today only grassy mounds and scattered stones mark where it once stood. Visitors walk across farmland where the castle once rose above the riverbank. The Mains of Brux farmhouse stands on the site and shows parts of the original stonework. The quiet fields stretch towards the river Don, giving a sense of how the Forbeses once commanded the land.
