Pfarrkirche Sankt Ulrich, Johannserberg, Brückl

The Catholic parish church of St Ulrich stands on the Johannserberg ridge above the settlement of St Ulrich in the municipality of Brückl, Carinthia. Its late-Gothic structure, built around 1500, rises beside a walled cemetery under Denkmalschutz. A steeply pitched roof of stone slabs and a tall west tower with a pointed spire mark the exterior, while the interior reveals a rib-vaulted nave and a single-bay choir with a five-sided apse. Inside, the church holds two notable baroque sculptures: a carved group of St Ulrich, St Agnes and St Apollonia from the former neo-Gothic high altar, and two further panels depicting St Stephen and St Joseph. Above the west gallery five painted scenes of Christ’s life were added in 1845 by Andreas Melchior. Ornamental rib-vault paintings with angel figures and scrolling foliage date from the late 16th century, and the choir ribs bear a builder’s mark reading 15(0)3. The churchyard retains its original enclosure and gravestones, giving a quiet setting for the late-Gothic building. The surrounding hilltop offers wide views over the Görtschitz valley and the Karawanken mountains. The stone-paved forecourt and simple porch provide a modest approach to the richly decorated interior.
