Bilstein Castle (Lennestadt)

Bilstein Castle stands on a steep spur of the Rosenberg hill in the Sauerland, overlooking the town of Lennestadt. The castle’s name comes from the green volcanic rock on which it is built, a keratophyre promontory that rises sharply above the surrounding land. Two round towers dominate the site: the Chapel Tower and the Hohnekamp Tower, each about eight metres wide. A 20th-century archway links the towers above ground, while a tunnel connects them below. The castle’s defences were focused on the gentle slope to the northeast, where the hill meets the main landmass. The castle has served as a youth hostel since 1927, with later additions blending into its historic fabric. The main ward’s northwest wing and the southwest block survive from earlier centuries, while the southeast wing was added in 1978 to expand the hostel. A brick bridge now spans the moat between the inner and outer baileys, which is about 15 metres wide where it remains open. The outer bailey holds three buildings: a gatehouse, a timber-framed house, and a festival hall. A lime tree grows on a stone terrace on the valley side of the central block. Visitors walk across the brick bridge into the outer bailey and through the gatehouse into the inner courtyard. The round towers frame views over the Sauerland’s rolling hills, while the tunnel beneath offers a glimpse of the castle’s medieval construction. The timber-framed house and festival hall host events and gatherings, adding life to the historic setting. The lime tree on its stone terrace stands as a living landmark, casting shade over the terrace below. From the portal terrace, the land drops away steeply on three sides, reinforcing the castle’s strategic position.
