Church of the Assumption

The parish church of Mühlheim am Inn stands in the village of Mühlheim in Upper Austria. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, part of the Altheim-Aspach deanery in the Diocese of Linz. Both the church and its adjoining cemetery are protected as historic monuments. The church’s origins date back to a building first recorded in 1140. The present Gothic structure was built between the late 15th century and about 1520. The oldest part is the choir, while the nave and tower were added around 1500 to 1520. The tower’s upper two storeys were completed in 1616. Later additions include a sacristy and former mortuary chapel, now the Lourdes chapel, added in 1707 and remodelled in 1896. Inside, a baroque remodelling took place in 1726, with ceiling frescoes and stucco work by Johann Michael Vierthaler between 1737 and 1738. The single-aisled nave has three bays and an enclosed two-bay choir ending in a three-sided apse. Gothic vault ribs were removed and the surfaces covered with baroque stucco and paintings in the early 18th century. The west tower has a rib-vaulted bell chamber and an octagonal spire. The richly detailed south portal and west door show late Gothic craftsmanship. Inside, the high altar dates from about 1800 and features a Madonna and Child by Ferdinand Rothböck from 1893. The side altars, dating from 1686 to 1688, include paintings by Georg Puchner and sculptures by Sebastian Hagenauer. The church also contains a late Gothic crucifix from about 1510–1520, a baroque font, and several notable red marble memorial slabs.
