St Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Kensal Green

St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery lies beside Harrow Road in Kensal Green, London. Founded in 1858, it covers 29 acres and holds more than 165,000 burials of Roman Catholics. A Gothic chapel stands at its heart, used for funeral and memorial services. The cemetery shares its boundary with the larger Kensal Green Cemetery nearby. Visitors can still consult computerised burial records dating from 1858 at the cemetery office. The grounds contain war memorials for Belgian soldiers and Commonwealth service personnel from both world wars. A Cross of Sacrifice honours British, Irish, French, Czechoslovak and Canadian servicemen. A Screen Wall lists graves that could not take individual headstones. Among the notable interments are conductor Sir John Barbirolli, activist Marcus Garvey and spy Peter Ashmun Ames. Paths wind past rows of headstones and family vaults under mature trees. The chapel walls carry many memorial plaques to artists, writers and clergy. Irish migrants from the Great Famine rest here alongside figures from British public life. The peaceful setting offers a quiet space to read names and reflect on the lives they represent.
