Theatr Clwyd

Theatr Clwyd stands one mile from Mold in Flintshire, North East Wales. It is a regional arts centre and producing theatre, part of the County Civic Centre beside County Hall. The building opened in 1976 after being commissioned by the former Flintshire County Council. Between 1998 and 2015 it traded as Clwyd Theatr Cymru before reverting to its original name. The complex includes five auditoria of different sizes and a cinema. The theatre has a strong record of staging classic and modern plays. Artistic directors have included George Roman, Toby Robertson and Terry Hands, who introduced leading actors such as Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Dalton. Terry Hands’ productions of Shakespeare were widely praised, and his 2014 revival of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood toured to 44,000 people. Recent seasons under Tamara Harvey featured award-winning shows like Home, I’m Darling, which transferred to the National Theatre and the West End. Visitors find a modern theatre with adaptable spaces. The largest auditorium seats 570, while smaller studios hold up to 250 and 120. A temporary theatre called The Mix operated during redevelopment, and the foyer and actor’s village provided space for events. The cinema shows films alongside live performances. The building sits next to County Hall in the civic centre, close to Mold’s town centre.
