Bürgerspital Bad Leonfelden

The Bürgerspital stands in the small town of Bad Leonfelden in Upper Austria, beside the Spitalgasse. Built in the early 16th century, it once housed poor and sick citizens and their children. The complex includes a separate Spitalkirche, also from the same period, which was designed so patients could be wheeled from their beds straight into the church. The site reflects the town’s late-medieval care system. In 1505 the local judge and council bought a house from Paul and turned it into a spital funded by the citizens. Records show the spital owned farmland and a vineyard in Krems. Two managers ran the spital, one of them also serving as market warden, while a spitalsgeistlicher led daily prayers. Maria Theresia later limited the number of residents to twenty-four and restricted entry to the poorest. Today the restored complex shows late-Gothic craftsmanship. Visitors enter through the old gateway into a quiet courtyard. The Spitalkirche still has its original fittings, including a low-level door so beds could be rolled inside. After major renovations in 1987 and again for the 2013 state exhibition, both buildings stand as quiet witnesses to five centuries of charity and architecture.
