Thonock

Thonock is a small settlement in West Lindsey, Lincolnshire, about three kilometres north of Gainsborough on the A159 road. It lies within the civil parish of Blyton and includes the hamlet of Havercroft. The place first appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 with just five households. By the early 14th century it formed part of Gainsborough, later splitting into High and Low (Nether) Thonock. Aerial photographs still show the old village boundaries crossed by the railway line to Grimsby. The parish was created in 1894 but was dissolved again in 1974. Despite its deserted medieval status, no earthworks remain visible today. Only the golf club at Thonock Park marks the site of the former village. Havercroft’s lost settlement can be pinpointed on maps at grid reference SK 82799 93194 near Morton. Visitors find quiet lanes and open fields where the village once stood. The golf course offers wide views across the flat Lincolnshire countryside. There are no grand ruins or museums, just the peaceful remains of a place recorded over nine centuries ago.
