Schloss Gablingen stands in the Swabian village of Gablingen, part of the Augsburg district in Bavaria. It consists of a tall High Castle and a long Low Castle, perched above the Schmutter river on the edge of the Lech valley. The ensemble includes the nearby St Martin’s church, forming a striking skyline above the valley floor. The site overlooks rolling farmland and distant wooded ridges. The two buildings sit close together, marking the former centre of Fugger power in the area. Their position on the valley rim gives sweeping views north towards Augsburg and south into the hills.
The complex is worth visiting for its well-preserved 16th-century Fugger architecture. The Fugger family bought the estate in 1527 and held it until 1889, using it as both residence and administrative seat. The High Castle’s steep roof and small oriel windows contrast with the church’s tall tower topped by a bulbous dome. In 1596 the family joined church and castle with a stone bridge, creating a single fortified ensemble. The walled garden below the High Castle is laid out in terraces, adding to the site’s grandeur. Above the main gate, wrought-iron tracery bears the Fugger lilies, a clear sign of the family’s presence.
Visitors find the High Castle’s narrow staircase tower rising beside the church. A stone bridge links the two buildings at first-floor level, offering a quiet walk above the garden. The enclosed garden itself has stone walls and levelled beds, enclosed by clipped hedges. Inside the gate, the ironwork roundel shows the Fugger coat of arms in delicate scrolls. From the terrace walls, views stretch across the Lech valley to the city of Augsburg on clear days. The Low Castle lies below, its long façade facing the garden, completing the symmetrical outlook.
