Saint Lawrence Church

The Catholic parish church of St Lawrence stands in the centre of Drösing, a small town in the Gänserndorf district of Lower Austria. Built as a fortified church, it has been protected as a listed monument since the 13th century. The present building replaces an older Romanesque structure whose foundations and crypt were uncovered during 18th-century alterations. The church preserves a rare three-storey Romanesque tower with slit windows and a later Baroque stone spire. Inside, a three-bay nave opens into a broad central space topped by a flat dome, its walls lined with double pilasters and vaulted ceilings. The organ loft projects over a narrow west bay, its carved railing curving forward above the gallery. The Baroque furnishings include altars transferred from dissolved monasteries in the 1740s. The high altar shows St Lawrence flanked by statues of Sebastian, Florian, John the Baptist and Leonard, while side altars carry works by Martin Johann Schmidt and a figure of the Immaculate Conception dated 1708. Baroque Stations of the Cross panels and a late 18th-century double bass add to the interior’s historical depth.
