Parish church in Kottingbrunn

The Catholic parish church of St Achatius stands beside the old moat of Kottingbrunn castle in the market town of Kottingbrunn, Baden district, Lower Austria. The church is dedicated to Saint Achatius and belongs to the Baden deanery in the Archdiocese of Vienna. Both the church and the former cemetery are listed monuments. The church became a parish in 1355 after earlier links to Traiskirchen and Leobersdorf. After a fire in 1669 it was rebuilt and extended between 1669 and 1693. In 1965–66 the architect Erwin Plevan added modern wings on both sides. Inside, a three-bay nave has cross-ribbed vaulting with late-historicist stained glass by Franz Drapela from 1966. The high altar from the early 18th century shows Saint Achatius with the Fourteen Holy Helpers. A copy of the Black Madonna of Altötting, donated in 1850 by Count Joachim von Münch-Bellinghausen, hangs on the triumphal arch. The former pulpit’s balustrade with figures of Faith, Hope and Charity survives in the organ loft. Outside, three of the original nine cemetery chapels remain within the old enclosing wall.
