St Nicholas' Church, West Itchenor

St Nicholas’ Church stands in the small village of West Itchenor, beside the Chichester channel in West Sussex. A low flint building with a tiled roof, it was first built as a chapel around 1175 and enlarged into a parish church between 1180 and 1197. The nave and chancel still show the simple Norman lines, while later centuries added a vestry and a west gallery. The churchyard holds generations of Itchenor families, their weathered headstones leaning among yew and hawthorn. A narrow lane leads from the harbour road through a wooden kissing-gate into the churchyard, where swallows flicker above the grass in summer. On quiet evenings the sound of curlews drifts in from the salt marshes. The church is worth the journey for its long musical story and its Grade I listing. In 1870 a harmonium replaced strings and winds, then a pipe organ arrived in 1922. Margot Linton-Bogle gave a reed organ in 1956 and an electronic Jennings in 1961, which moved to the new west gallery in 1964. Margaret Thomas donated the present Viscount organ in 1994. The bells tell another tale: the treble dates from 1530, the second and tenor from the seventeenth century, rehung by Whitechapel in 1988 with Ellacombe apparatus for swing or hand chiming. The churchwardens still ring them before services and major events. Inside, the whitewashed walls frame box pews and a plain octagonal font. The west gallery holds the Viscount organ, its stops marked in faded ink. Three medieval bells hang in the tower, their ropes descending to the ringing chamber. Stained glass windows at the east end throw coloured light onto the chancel steps. Outside, the churchyard path curves past a lychgate built from ship timbers, a reminder of the village’s seafaring past. Beyond the gate the saltings stretch to the harbour, where oyster boats bob at low tide.
