Judgement Tower

The Judgement Tower stands in Maribor, Slovenia, as a fortified medieval tower built in the early 14th century. It secured the southwestern corner of the city walls and was rebuilt in 1540 with a conical roof that later burned down in the 17th century. The Renaissance structure reaches the tops of the second-floor windows, followed by an early 17th-century extension. Four more floors were added in the 19th century, and the tower partially burned again in 1937 before being restored in the 1950s. It is one of the few remaining parts of Maribor’s former city walls, alongside the Water Tower and the Jewish Tower. The Benetke Tower, another part of the walls, was demolished in the late 1960s to make way for a hydroelectric reservoir. The tower’s layered history reflects Maribor’s medieval defences and later transformations. Visitors find a tower that rises above the city’s old centre, its stone walls showing marks of time and restoration. The surrounding area includes remnants of the city walls, offering a glimpse of Maribor’s past. The tower’s height and position once made it a key lookout point. Today, it stands as a quiet reminder of the city’s fortified past.
