Crystal Palace Dinosaurs

The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs stand in Crystal Palace Park, a public park in the London Borough of Bromley. They are a series of life-sized sculptures of extinct animals, created in the 19th century. The park itself was once home to the relocated Crystal Palace, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins designed the models under the guidance of Sir Richard Owen, who coined the term Dinosauria. The sculptures were unveiled in 1854 as the world’s first dinosaur models. They represent 15 genera of extinct animals, though only three are true dinosaurs. The models were groundbreaking for their time, reflecting the best scientific knowledge of the 1850s. Yet they contain many inaccuracies by modern standards, a result of incomplete fossils and early paleontology. The Iguanodon and Megalosaurus figures are particularly flawed, showing creatures with misplaced features. Despite this, the sculptures remain historically significant as the first of their kind. They were later granted listed status, recognising their cultural and artistic importance. Today, they attract visitors interested in both natural history and Victorian ingenuity. A visitor finds the models arranged across three islands in the park, each representing a different geological era. The Palaeozoic island features a limestone cliff and models like the Dicynodon, based on fragmentary fossils. The Mesozoic island includes the famous Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus, alongside ichthyosaurs shown partly in water. The Cenozoic island holds mammals like the mastodon. A recent restoration added a pivoting bridge to Dinosaur Island, improving access while protecting the sculptures. The park also offers views of the surrounding ornamental gardens and lakes.
