Burgstall Schlossberg (Schongau)

Burgstall Schlossberg stands on a wooded hilltop at 790 metres above sea level, south-east of Schongau. The site once held a medieval spur castle built to overlook the Lech valley. Today only grass and scattered stones mark where the curtain wall once ran. The Bavarian heritage office lists the hill as a multi-part earthwork from the early or high Middle Ages. Nearby lie the ruins of Burg Peiting and a separate section of the same fortification system. The remains are quiet reminders of the region’s past. Archaeologists have recorded the layout but no buildings survive above ground. The hill still carries faint traces of the defensive ditches and ramparts that once defended the approach. Visitors walk over the grassy mound without seeing any standing masonry. The site is recognised as an important archaeological monument in Bavaria. A path winds up the gentle slope from the southern edge of the forest. At the top there are wide views over the Lech plain and the Alps on clear days. The hill is part of a longer ridge that once carried a chain of watch-posts. Today it offers a peaceful spot to stand where knights once kept guard. The only sounds are wind in the trees and birdsong from the surrounding woods.
