Bacherswall
Bacherswall is a former Slavic wooden fort on the Nonnenhof peninsula in the Lieps lake near Neubrandenburg. It was built in the 7th century as a refuge for people living around the lake. The name may come from an old word for a young wild boar. The fort reached its peak in the late 8th century, judging by finds from the site. In the 13th century the Tollensesee and Lieps were raised by the building of the Vierrademühle, flooding most of the fort. About 9 200 square metres now lie under water. The remains include a 20-metre-wide earth bank with traces of a palisade and a broad ditch in front. Excavations in the 1980s showed that wooden bridges once linked the fort to nearby islands. Today the site lies within a nature reserve and has no public path.
