Edinample Castle

Edinample Castle stands beside Loch Earn near Balquhidder in the Stirling council area. It is a late 16th-century tower house built on a Z-plan with round corner towers. The main block is three storeys high with an attic, and bartizans project from the north and south corners. Circular stair towers rise from the first-storey level on the northern side. The castle incorporates parts of an earlier tower on its eastern side. The castle was built in 1584 by Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, known as ‘Black Duncan’. It was granted to his family in 1547 by Henry Stewart, 1st Lord Methven. Later owners remodelled the interior and roofs around 1790. A two-storey porch and stairway were added to the northern face in the 18th or 19th century. By the 1960s the castle had fallen into dereliction before being restored as a private home between 1968 and 1998. Visitors see the rectangular main block with its three storeys and attic. The round corner towers rise four storeys high, each about seven metres in diameter. The bartizans and stair towers show fine corbelling in stone. The 1870 corrugated-iron office still stands on the eastern side. The interior reflects the 1790 remodelling, while later additions have been removed to restore the original form.
