Morden tube station

Morden tube station stands at the southern end of the Northern line in the London Borough of Merton. It sits on London Road, a main road that once cut through open farmland. The station marks the end of the line, making it the most southerly stop on the whole Underground network. Nearby are two green spaces, Morden Hall Park and Morden Park, which offer quiet walks just beyond the station. The next stop towards central London is South Wimbledon, a short ride away. Built on what was rural Surrey in the 1920s, the station helped turn a quiet parish into a growing suburb. The station’s modernist design came from architect Charles Holden, chosen by Frank Pick to create a new kind of Underground entrance. Holden’s plan stripped ornament away, using white Portland stone and clean lines to frame a large roundel above the entrance. Inside, an octagonal ticket hall lets daylight through a central skylight, while wooden ticket booths once stood at the centre. Three tracks run through the station, with two island platforms and steps leading down from the hall. The platforms are numbered 1 to 5, though departures are usually shown as 2, 3 and 5. A wide cutting holds the tracks in daylight before they dive into the longest tunnel on the network. Visitors find a busy terminus with shops on either side of the entrance and lifts added for easier access. Cross-bridges now link the platforms, and roundels have been reinstated on poles outside. Above the cutting, a modern office building spans the gap, showing how the station’s roof was meant to carry more floors. Bus routes fan out from here, carrying passengers deeper into south London and Surrey. The station’s clean lines and practical layout still serve the area it helped to build, standing as a quiet monument to early 20th-century design.
