Basaltkegel Parkstein
The Parkstein is a volcanic hill rising near the village of the same name in the Steinwald Mountains. It stands 595 metres above sea level and is crowned by the remains of Parkstein Castle. The basalt cone is one of the most popular day-trip destinations in North Upper Palatinate. The surrounding village offers a quiet base for walkers exploring the area. The hill is also known locally as the Hoher Parkstein. The basalt formation is famous for its pentagonal and hexagonal columns, up to one metre high. These columns extend up to 30 metres into the ground where softer rock has weathered away. The exposed basalt wall measures 38 metres across. Alexander von Humboldt called the Parkstein the most beautiful basalt cone in Europe. In 2004 it was listed as one of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes. Visitors find a circular path around the basalt outcrop with benches for resting. The summit offers wide views over the Steinwald Mountains. Information boards explain the geological history of the lava stream. The village below has cafés and small shops for refreshments. The contrast between the dark basalt and the surrounding green landscape is striking.
