Burg Spitzenberg
The Burg Spitzenberg stands as the remains of a medieval nobleman’s hilltop fortress west of Kuchen in the Göppingen district. It rises on the southern edge of the Fils valley, on a summit called the Spitzenberg that reaches 665 metres. Only scattered sections of wall still stand above ground, hinting at the structure’s former size. The Spitzenberg family once owned the castle and counted the Zähringer and the counts of Helfenstein among their relatives. Bishop Gottfried of Spitzenberg was a notable member. Excavations in 1913 by the Swabian Alb Association, led by Konrad Albert Koch, uncovered finds mainly from the late 14th century, though the castle is believed to have been destroyed as early as 1311. Many of these artefacts were lost after being kept in Kuchen’s town hall and later discarded during renovations. Visitors reach the site along quiet paths that climb through wooded slopes to the hilltop. The ruins sit exposed to the wind, offering wide views over the valley below. A few low walls and earthworks mark where halls and towers once stood. The surrounding beech woods add to the sense of isolation, making the place feel far removed from nearby villages.
