Burg Crailsheim

Burg Crailsheim once stood at the southern end of Grabenstraße in the town of Crailsheim. The modest motte-and-bailey structure probably served in the 13th century as the official seat of the Dienstmannen von Crailsheim family, first mentioned in 1221. Records suggest the site was damaged during a siege of the town between 1379 and 1380 by soldiers from nearby imperial cities. Little remains above ground today, but the site’s outline can still be traced in the landscape. The vanished fortress was a simple tower-mound arrangement typical of the region’s medieval military architecture. Its purpose was administrative rather than grand, linking the family’s local authority to the surrounding countryside. Archaeological work has confirmed the location beneath later buildings, though no visible ruins survive. Visitors now see ordinary houses along Grabenstraße, including the address Grabenstraße 15, built over the former bailey. A low rise in the pavement marks where the motte once rose above the town. The site offers no grand views or restored halls, but it quietly recalls Crailsheim’s medieval past and the vanished power of the Dienstmannen von Crailsheim.
