Evangelische Lukaskirche

The Lukaskirche stands in Bürmoos, a town in the Salzburg region of Austria. It serves as the main Protestant parish church for the area. The building belongs to the Evangelical Superintendentur A. B. Salzburg and Tirol. Its history is tied to post-war refugee movements, as it was one of seven churches built for Protestant refugees from Transylvania. Construction took place between 1961 and 1963, funded by the Gustav-Adolf-Werk and the Verband der Siebenbürger Sachsen. The church was consecrated on 20 October 1963 by Superintendent Wilhelm Mensing-Braun. The church’s design, by Hanns Enhuber, deliberately resembles a barn, with a simple exterior and a tall, angled bell tower. Inside, the space is shaped by a folded wooden ceiling, giving it a distinctive feel. The altar area is set apart by indirect lighting, creating a calm focus for worship. Two bells hang in the tower, bearing the inscriptions ‘Wachet’ and ‘betet’ and ‘Stimme der Heimat’. In 1971, a new organ was installed, built from parts of an old Mozarteum organ by Hermann Oettl. Twelve years later, Wilhelm Kaufmann painted two large frescoes beside the altar: ‘Christus am Ölberg’ and ‘Christi Auferstehung und Verklärung’. Visitors enter through a plain wooden porch into a rectangular nave. The walls are mostly solid, with only a horizontal band of windows near the roofline. Above the door, a simple cross surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists marks the church’s purpose. The organ and frescoes add colour and sound to the otherwise unadorned interior. Outside, the bell tower rises beside the building, its two bells ringing out over the town. The church remains a quiet place for reflection, its modest design reflecting both its origins and its continuing role in the community.
