Golders Green tube station

Golders Green station stands at the meeting point of Finchley Road and Golders Green Road in north-west London. It belongs to the Northern line’s Edgware branch, placed between Brent Cross and Hampstead stations. The building sits beside the bus station and the former Hippodrome, once home to the BBC Concert Orchestra. A closed exit once led to Finchley Road, and the site lies in London fare zone three. The station opened in 1907 as one end of a new underground line that soon spurred rapid house-building. The line was planned to push north to Edgware and Hendon before the First World War. Work began in 1922 and reached Hendon Central the next year. Golders Green kept semaphore signals longer than any other Northern line station, only replacing them in 1950. Today three tracks serve a side platform and two island platforms numbered one to five. Platform one is staff-only, while three and four handle terminating trains that rarely reverse. Two lifts installed in 2008 give step-free access to platforms two and three, and four and five. The bus station outside hosts routes 13, 83, 102 and many others, plus night and school services. National Express coaches also call here. The old Hippodrome now houses a religious organisation, marking the spot where music once filled the air.
