Carn a' Chlamain

Càrn a’ Chlamain is a Scottish mountain in Perth and Kinross, about twelve kilometres north of Blair Atholl. It stands on a broad, gently sloping plateau north-east of Glen Tilt. The River Tarf rises on its north-western slopes and curves round the plateau’s northern edge. Another tributary of the River Tilt marks the plateau’s western boundary. The summit is a rounded dome of boulders rising above the surrounding moorland. The hill is usually climbed from Glen Tilt, where the most popular route begins at Forest Lodge. A stalker’s path leaves the glen and climbs steeply in zig-zags before crossing the plateau to the top. Because Forest Lodge has no public road, walkers or cyclists must cover the ten kilometres from Old Blair. An alternative route follows the south-east ridge, which can be joined about three kilometres down the glen from Forest Lodge. The summit offers wide views across the Forest of Atholl and the surrounding glens. The plateau itself is a quiet expanse of heather and grass, broken only by scattered boulders. The climb is steady but rewarding, with no technical difficulties. The changing light on the boulders and moorland makes the return walk memorable.
