Church of the Assumption

The parish church of Kirchdorf am Inn stands in the village of Kirchdorf am Inn in Upper Austria. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, part of the Altheim deanery in the Diocese of Linz. The church and its surrounding cemetery are protected as historic monuments. Built around 1170, the church began as a Romanesque structure before being rebuilt in the Gothic style using tuff stone. In 1901, Matthäus Schlager added a neo-Gothic Lourdes Chapel to the north, connected at a right angle to the main church by a covered passage. The interior features a single-nave, three-bay nave with semi-recessed buttresses and round pilasters. The two-bay choir, completed in 1489, ends in a three-sided apse and retains traces of its original Gothic ribbed vaults, later painted over. Inside, the early 18th-century high altar displays a central group depicting the Coronation of Mary, flanked by a Rococo tabernacle likely crafted by Johann Ferdinand Schwanthaler. The nave contains notable Renaissance-era gravestones of the Katzenberg estate owners, including Ernst von Schwarzenstein from 1567 and his descendants. The southern porch houses additional Gothic and Renaissance tombstones. The church’s south tower rises as an octagonal spire above a square base, topped with a pointed roof. The surrounding cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall with a sloping coping.
