Skipper's Island

Skipper’s Island is a 94.3-hectare nature reserve north of Kirby-le-Soken in Essex. Owned and managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust, it lies east of England on the coast. The island’s highest ground holds thorn thickets divided by grassy rides. Its lowest parts are saltmarsh, and rough pasture with brackish pools covers much of the land. Sea hog’s fennel and lax-flowered sea-lavender grow among the flora. The island supports breeding birds such as shelducks and oystercatchers. Its saltmarsh and rough pasture provide feeding and nesting places for these species. The Essex Wildlife Trust keeps the habitat in good condition for wildlife. Access is limited and arranged in advance with the trust. Visitors find quiet walks along grassy rides and through thorn thickets. Saltmarsh edges and brackish pools add variety to the landscape. Shelducks and oystercatchers can be seen feeding or nesting. The island offers a peaceful place to watch coastal birds at work.
