Hochwurzen

The Hochwurzen rises 1,849 metres above the Enns valley on the northern edge of the Schladminger Tauern. It belongs to the Schladming ski area and links with the Planai and Reiteralm resorts. A single lift carries skiers from Schladming village up to the summit region. Every winter the mountain hosts 7 kilometres of prepared pistes for all levels. A 7-kilometre natural toboggan run winds down the slopes, one of the longest in Austria. Ski schools operate beside several alpine huts, including the Hochwurzenhütte run by the Austrian Alpine Club. At the top stands the Hochwurzenhütte, offering views across the Enns valley and the Dachstein massif. In summer the same lift carries hikers to the summit where an air-quality monitoring station records mountain air. The annual Hochwurzen-Berglauf race climbs the mountain every autumn, drawing hundreds of runners.
