Pfarrkirche Anger

The Roman Catholic parish church of Anger stands in the village of Anger in the market town of the same name in the Weiz district of Styria. It is dedicated to Saint Andrew and belongs to the deanery of Weiz in the diocese of Graz-Seckau. The church and its graveyard are listed as protected monuments. The church began as a Romanesque building around 1140–1161, originally serving as a fortified church. In the 14th century a ribbed vault was inserted into the square choir and a belfry with pointed windows was added. The present church, aligned north to south, was rebuilt between 1708 and 1711 by master builder Lorenz Stattaler. Inside, late Gothic frescoes from the second half of the 15th century were uncovered in 1938, depicting the Last Judgement, the Heavenly Jerusalem, the twelve apostles and the symbols of the four Evangelists. The church’s interior shows a four-bay nave with side chapels, high galleries and cross-ribbed vaults on pilasters. The single-bay choir ends in a semicircle and contains a sacrament niche. The high altar, attributed to Marcus Anton Schokotnigg around 1720, features a painting by Joseph Adam von Mölk dated 1770. The pulpit, attributed to Josef Schokotnigg, dates from about 1730–1740. A Roman inscription stone from the 1st or 2nd century is built into the south wall, and a painted epitaph inside commemorates the shoemaker Lorenz Bigler from 1553.
