Augustine Congregational Church

Augustine United Church stands in Edinburgh’s Old Town, a stone’s throw from the Royal Mile. Its present building at 41 George IV Bridge dates from 1861 and mixes Romanesque, Renaissance and Classical styles beneath a three-tiered tower. The congregation began in 1802 and worshipped in Chambers Street before moving to the new site. The church became a Category B listed building in 1970 and has recently been renovated. It now serves as the Augustine Church Centre, hosting both worship and community activities. The church is recognised for its inclusive stance on marriage, celebrating both opposite-sex and same-sex marriages. It houses charities such as Christian Aid and the Edinburgh Community Mental Health Chaplaincy. Community groups, choirs and political organisations meet here regularly, including the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union and Edinburgh Youth Choir. Each summer, the centre hosts Fringe events under the name Paradise Green. In 1997, the church hosted the national launch of the first Fairtrade fortnight. Visitors find a spacious interior with high ceilings and ornate detailing from the 19th century. The building’s tower rises above the surrounding rooftops, offering views across the city. The centre’s halls host concerts, meetings and exhibitions throughout the year. The entrance on George IV Bridge is easily reached from the Royal Mile. Inside, the light from tall windows falls on the restored stonework and modern furnishings.
