Museum for Architectural Drawing

The Museum für Architekturzeichnung is a private museum in Berlin run by the Tchoban Foundation. It opened in 2013 and shows three or four exhibitions each year. Drawings come from the foundation’s own collection and from loans by other museums. The foundation was set up by architect Sergei Tchoban in 2009 to promote hand drawing among young architects. Dr Eva-Maria Barkhofen and Dr Christian Benedik share the curatorship with Tchoban. Sergei Tchoban began his collection with a single drawing by Pietro di Gottardo Gonzaga. It now holds more than a hundred sheets from the 16th century to today. The foundation also owns over a hundred drawings by 20th- and 21st-century architects, including works by Tchoban himself. Exhibitions have travelled to Frankfurt, Moscow and London before settling in Berlin. Recent shows have featured Lebbeus Woods, Alexander Brodsky and Steven Holl. The building was designed by SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov in Moscow. It is a four-storey block of cast concrete with a glass top floor. Strong relief panels on the outside show enlarged fragments of architectonic sketches. Inside, the ground floor houses the shop and library. The first and second floors have cabinets for temporary exhibitions, while the third floor stores the collection. The top floor is the foundation’s office, reached through the glass section.
