Butterberg

The Butterberg is a hill rising to about 280 metres in the Harz Foreland, halfway between Ilsenburg and Drübeck. The landscape around it is shaped by the Ilse valley to the west and the Nonnenbach valley to the east. To the northeast it meets the Wahrberg, while the southern slope falls steeply toward the Landesstraße 85. The Bundesstraße 6 runs north of the railway line from Danstedt to Vienenburg. The hill’s uneven slopes give it a varied character. From the summit there are wide views across the Harz Foreland and the ridges of the Harz Mountains. Ilsenburg is mostly hidden behind the Eichholz copse, but Drübeck is clearly visible. The highest point is marked by a spot height of 279.1 metres on a track to the northeast. The Butterberg is one of several hills with this name in German-speaking regions. Its modest height still offers a fine outlook over the surrounding countryside. Visitors reach the top by following paths that cross the gentle northern flanks or the steeper southern side. The Landesstraße 85 and Bundesstraße 6 lie below, framing the view. The nearby railway line adds a reminder of the area’s connections. The contrast between open views and sheltered woodland makes the Butterberg a quiet place to stand and look out.
