Cultural heritage D-2-7246-0058 in Tittling

The former castle at Tittling once stood beside the vanished church of St Vitus on a gentle slope in Lower Bavaria. Its earthworks were still marked on the first Bavarian land register in the early 19th century, but today only faint traces remain. The site is now covered by the market square and the Gasthof zur Post. The castle passed through many noble hands between the 13th and 18th centuries. Dukes, Puchbergs, Nußdorfs, Schaetzls and Taufkirchens all held Tittling at different times. After a fire in 1803 destroyed both castle and church, the ruins were never rebuilt. The local patrimonial court was finally abolished in 1848. Visitors can walk across the low mound where the castle once stood. A curved ditch and low bank still show the outline of the old defences. The market square and inn now occupy the site, offering a quiet place to pause and imagine the vanished fortress.
