Cathedral of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God and Holy Royal Martyrs

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs stands in Chiswick, West London, on Harvard Road. It is a Russian Orthodox church built outside Russia, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the murdered Romanov family. The cathedral opened in 1999, with lesser and full consecrations in 2003 and 2005. It replaced earlier Russian Orthodox sites in London, including one on Emperor’s Gate which operated from 1959 to 1989. The cathedral belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, established in 1920. Bishop Nicholas Karpoff became the first Orthodox bishop in London since the 11th century when he took office in 1928. Divine Liturgy is mostly in Church Slavonic, except on the third Sunday of each month when it is in English. The Sunday sermon is delivered in both Russian and English. Inside, the cathedral offers a peaceful place for worship and reflection. Its architecture reflects traditional Russian Orthodox design with icons and frescoes adorning the walls. The building provides a spiritual home for the Russian community in London. Visitors can attend services or simply admire the interior’s craftsmanship and quiet atmosphere.
