Burg Gerichtszoller

The Burg Gerichtszoller stands on a narrow ridge 674 metres above sea level, five kilometres south-west of Emmingen-Liptingen. It was built as an early medieval refuge fort, 220 metres long and between 35 and 50 metres wide. The site overlooks the Krieger valley and the surrounding farmland. Archaeologists recognise only faint traces of the old walls today. Excavations show it was used as a safe place during times of danger. The layout suggests it sheltered local people rather than a permanent lord. Few written records survive from the period. Visitors walk a quiet woodland path to the ridge. Grass and bracken now cover the earthworks. The view stretches across open fields and distant woods. On clear days the Alps appear in the south-west. The place feels remote, with only the wind and birds for company.
